Ryan remained standing behind his desk.

For several long seconds, neither of them spoke.

Emily could hear nothing except the sound of her own heartbeat.

Ryan’s office suddenly felt too quiet.

Too still.

He slowly gestured toward the chair opposite him.

“Sit.”

Emily obeyed without saying a word.

Ryan remained standing for another moment before walking toward the large floor-to-ceiling window overlooking Manhattan.

His hands rested inside his pockets.

He stared outside.

“I’m listening,” he said quietly.

Emily swallowed.

“I don’t even know where to begin.”

Ryan gave a small nod.

“Begin at the beginning.”

She closed her eyes briefly.

“I never planned for any of this to happen.”

Ryan remained silent.

“It started with loneliness.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I joined a dating app because… I was tired of feeling invisible.”

A faint smile appeared on Ryan’s face.

Not because he found anything funny.

Because he finally recognized the same thoughtful, vulnerable way she spoke through their messages.

He said nothing.

Emily continued.

“When it asked for a picture…”

She stopped.

Her voice almost disappeared.

“I used Samantha’s.”

Ryan slowly turned around.

His expression remained unreadable.

“I know.”

Emily looked up.

“What?”

Ryan sighed quietly.

“I know that’s what you told me.”

“No…”

Emily whispered.

“I mean… that’s where it started.”

Ryan pulled out his chair and finally sat across from her.

His eyes never left hers.

“So every conversation…”

“Was me.”

“Every message?”

“Me.”

“The jokes?”

Emily nodded.

“The late-night conversations?”

“Me.”

“The stories about your mother?”

“Mine.”

“The books you recommended?”

“I actually read them.”

Ryan looked at her carefully.

For the first time…

Pieces started fitting together.

He remembered every conversation.

The woman who stayed awake until two in the morning discussing novels.

The woman who loved old bookstores.

The woman who hated thunderstorms.

The woman who believed silence could sometimes be more comforting than words.

Those conversations had never felt fake.

Not once.

His voice softened.

“Then who was I meeting?”

Emily lowered her eyes.

“Samantha.”

Ryan leaned back slowly.

He rubbed both hands across his face.

“This is insane.”

“I know.”

“No…”

he said quietly.

“I don’t think you understand.”

He looked directly at her.

“I’ve been trying to understand why the woman I talked to online felt completely different from the woman sitting across from me at dinner.”

Emily’s breathing caught.

“I thought…”

Ryan continued.

“…I thought maybe people just acted differently in person.”

Emily shook her head.

“I’m so sorry.”

Ryan didn’t answer immediately.

Instead he asked,

“Did Samantha know from the beginning?”

Emily hesitated.

“Not from the beginning.”

“When?”

“When you asked to meet.”

Ryan closed his eyes briefly.

“So that first dinner…”

“I begged her to help me.”

“And every meeting after that?”

Emily looked away.

“She… kept going.”

Ryan noticed something.

“You didn’t know.”

Emily shook her head slowly.

“No.”

“You lost control.”

A tear escaped before Emily could stop it.

“Yes.”

Ryan sat quietly.

The anger he expected to feel wasn’t arriving the way he imagined.

Instead…

He felt betrayed.

Confused.

Heartbroken.

Not only because Emily had lied.

But because he now realized someone else had continued the lie long after Emily wanted it to end.

He finally asked the question that mattered most.

“When were you going to tell me?”

Emily smiled sadly.

“Today.”

Ryan stared at her.

“No…”

she whispered.

“I mean before today.”

Emily looked ashamed.

“I wanted to tell you so many times.”

“When?”

“The first time you asked for a video call.”

Ryan remembered.

“My camera’s acting up.”

She nodded.

“The second time.”

“My phone is broken.”

Another nod.

“When you wanted to meet again.”

“I panicked.”

“When Samantha gave you her number…”

Emily closed her eyes.

“I realized I wasn’t losing just the lie anymore.”

Ryan watched her carefully.

“I was losing you.”

Silence settled between them again.

Outside, the city carried on as though nothing extraordinary had happened.

Inside the office…

Two strangers were slowly becoming the people they had unknowingly been talking to all along.

Ryan leaned forward.

“I need you to answer one question.”

Emily looked up.

“Only one.”

She nodded.

“When I said…”

His voice became softer.

“…that I thought I was falling in love with you…”

He paused.

“…what did you feel?”

Emily’s eyes filled instantly.

“I wanted to tell you the truth.”

Ryan smiled faintly.

“That’s not what I asked.”

She looked at him for several seconds.

Then finally answered.

“I fell in love with you too.”

Silence.

Ryan looked away.

His jaw tightened.

He believed her.

That was the problem.

Everything else had been wrapped in deception.

But that answer…

That answer sounded exactly like every honest message she had ever sent him.

Outside the office, Samantha remained seated in the reception area.

Every passing minute tightened the knot in her stomach.

She kept glancing toward Ryan’s closed office door.

Neither of them had come out.

Neither of them had raised their voices.

No shouting.

No arguments.

Just…

Silence.

And somehow…

That frightened her far more than anger ever could.
