Ryan looked up from behind his desk.

He offered a polite smile.

“Come in.”

Emily stepped inside.

The heavy door closed quietly behind her.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Ryan gestured toward the chair opposite his desk.

“Please… have a seat.”

Emily nodded.

“Thank you.”

She sat carefully, placing both hands on her lap to stop them from trembling.

Ryan noticed immediately.

“You look nervous.”

“I am.”

He leaned back slightly in his chair.

“The receptionist said this was important.”

“It is.”

He smiled politely.

“So…”

“What can I do for you?”

Emily opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Every sentence she had rehearsed disappeared.

Ryan waited patiently.

“There isn’t any rush,” he said gently.

“Take your time.”

Emily lowered her eyes.

“You don’t know me.”

Ryan frowned slightly.

“I’m sorry?”

“You’ve never actually met me.”

His expression became puzzled.

“I think you’ve mistaken my identity.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I haven’t.”

Ryan folded his hands together.

“I’m afraid I don’t understand.”

Emily inhaled slowly.

“My name is Emily Parker.”

Ryan blinked once.

Then frowned.

“…Emily?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

His expression softened with confusion.

“I’m sorry…”

“I don’t think we’ve met before.”

“We haven’t.”

“Then…”

“How do you know my name?”

Emily looked directly into his eyes.

“Because I’m the Emily you’ve been talking to.”

Silence.

Ryan stared at her.

For almost five seconds.

Then he laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

“I’m sorry…”

“I think there’s been some misunderstanding.”

“There hasn’t.”

“I’ve never seen you before.”

“I know.”

“You aren’t the woman I met.”

“No.”

“I’m not.”

Ryan’s smile disappeared.

His eyes narrowed.

“What exactly are you trying to tell me?”

Emily’s heartbeat hammered inside her chest.

“This is difficult.”

“I imagine it is.”

“But please…”

“Let me finish before you decide what you think of me.”

Ryan slowly nodded.

“Go ahead.”

Emily took another breath.

“When I created my dating profile…”

“I didn’t use my own picture.”

Ryan’s eyebrows drew together.

“I used someone else’s.”

Silence.

“I never thought anyone would notice me.”

“I never thought anyone would write to me.”

“I certainly never imagined meeting someone like you.”

Ryan said nothing.

Emily continued.

“Then your first message came.”

She smiled sadly.

“‘Hi. I don’t usually do this, but something about you made me stop.'”

Ryan’s face changed.

Very slightly.

She remembered.

Word for word.

Emily noticed it.

“I remember every conversation.”

“Every message.”

“Every late-night call.”

“Every joke.”

“Every good morning.”

“Every goodnight.”

Ryan’s breathing slowed.

Still…

He wasn’t convinced.

“So whose picture did you use?”

Emily hesitated.

Then answered quietly.

“Samantha Reed.”

Ryan froze.

Completely.

The room became unnaturally still.

“You’ve got to be kidding.”

“I wish I were.”

Ryan stood.

Walked toward the window.

Turned his back to her.

He stared across the Manhattan skyline without really seeing it.

After several long seconds…

He spoke.

“So…”

“The woman I met…”

“Was Samantha.”

“Yes.”

“And the woman I’ve been texting…”

Emily swallowed.

“Me.”

Ryan laughed once.

A hollow laugh.

“So which one of you have I been talking to?”

Emily closed her eyes.

“At first…”

“Only me.”

Ryan slowly turned around.

“At first?”

She nodded.

“When you wanted video calls…”

“I panicked.”

“I kept making excuses.”

Ryan remembered.

The broken camera.

The bad lighting.

The dropped phone.

Every excuse.

His jaw tightened.

“When you insisted on meeting…”

“I asked Samantha for help.”

“You asked her…”

“To pretend to be you.”

Emily nodded.

“Yes.”

Ryan looked away again.

Almost as if physically unable to process what he was hearing.

“And she agreed?”

“At first…”

“She said she was only helping.”

Ryan looked back.

“Only helping?”

Emily lowered her head.

“I didn’t know…”

“…things would change.”

His voice became quieter now.

“When did they change?”

Emily answered honestly.

“I don’t know.”

“I think…”

“…somewhere between pretending…”

“…and becoming real.”

Ryan closed his eyes.

He replayed everything.

The restaurant.

The strange feeling that something was off.

The different personality.

The different laughter.

The different energy.

The second phone number.

The video calls.

Everything.

Every instinct that had whispered something wasn’t right.

He had been right.

Just not in the way he imagined.

He opened his eyes again.

“So every message…”

“You wrote them?”

“Yes.”

“The poems?”

“Yes.”

“The voice notes?”

“Mine.”

“The playlists?”

Emily nodded.

“Mine.”

Ryan looked genuinely lost.

“But then…”

“…who have I been falling in love with?”

The question shattered Emily.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

“I don’t know anymore.”

Neither of them spoke.

The silence stretched between them.

Not awkward.

Not angry.

Just unbearably heavy.

Finally, Ryan spoke again.

“Why?”

Emily gave the only answer she had.

“Because…”

“…I spent my whole life believing no one could ever choose me.”

She laughed bitterly through tears.

“I thought if anyone ever looked at me…”

“…they’d keep scrolling.”

Ryan watched her quietly.

“So I borrowed a face.”

Her voice cracked.

“But somewhere along the way…”

“…my heart forgot it was pretending.”

Ryan’s shoulders slowly dropped.

He could hear something impossible in her voice.

Not manipulation.

Not performance.

Regret.

Real regret.

She wiped her tears.

“I know you probably hate me.”

“I don’t blame you.”

“I only came here because…”

“…you deserved the truth.”

She slowly stood.

“I’m sorry.”

She turned toward the door.

Her hand reached for the handle.

Then Ryan’s voice stopped her.

“Emily.”

She froze.

Without turning around.

He asked quietly,

“Was any of it real?”

Emily closed her eyes.

The tears rolled freely now.

She nodded.

“Every feeling.”

“Every word.”

“Every laugh.”

“I lied about my face…”

She paused.

“But I never lied about loving you.”

The room fell silent once again.

Ryan stood motionless behind his desk.

Emily remained at the door, afraid to turn around.

Neither of them knew what came next.

Because the truth had finally arrived.

And neither of them would ever be the same again.
