Ryan remained seated for several moments after Emily finished speaking.
Neither of them said a word.
The silence between them no longer felt hostile.
It felt… exhausted.
As though the truth had drained every ounce of strength from both of them.
Finally, Ryan leaned back in his chair and released a slow breath.
“I appreciate that you came.”
Emily looked at him uncertainly.
“I don’t know if I deserve your appreciation.”
“You deserve credit for one thing.”
She waited.
“You told me yourself.”
His voice remained calm.
“You weren’t exposed.”
“You confessed.”
Emily lowered her eyes.
“I couldn’t keep lying.”
Ryan nodded once.
“I believe that.”
Another silence settled over the room.
Then Ryan reached for the phone on his desk.
Emily frowned.
“What are you doing?”
Ryan pressed a button.
His assistant answered almost immediately.
“Yes, Mr. Carter?”
“The lady waiting outside.”
“The blonde.”
Emily’s heartbeat quickened.
Ryan continued calmly.
“Please ask her to come in.”
Emily’s eyes widened.
“Samantha?”
Ryan simply nodded.
“I think we’ve avoided this conversation long enough.”
Outside the office…
Samantha had barely moved from the chair near the reception desk.
Every minute that passed made her more uneasy.
She had expected shouting.
She had expected Emily to run out crying.
She had even expected Ryan to storm out looking furious.
Instead…
Nothing.
Only silence.
The receptionist approached her with a polite smile.
“Miss Reed?”
Samantha looked up.
“Mr. Carter will see you now.”
For the first time that afternoon…
Fear settled deep inside her chest.
She stood slowly.
Her heels clicked softly against the polished floor as she walked toward Ryan’s office.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
When she reached the door, she paused.
She took one slow breath before knocking gently.
“Come in,” Ryan said.
She opened the door.
The first thing she saw was Emily.
She sat calmy.
Their eyes met briefly.
Neither spoke.
Then Samantha looked at Ryan.
His expression revealed almost nothing.
“Close the door,” he said quietly.
She obeyed.
The soft click of the lock echoed through the office.
Ryan gestured toward the empty chair beside Emily.
“Please sit.”
Samantha sat gracefully.
She folded her hands together on her lap.
No one spoke.
Ryan looked at both women before him.
“If either of you had asked me yesterday how I imagined spending today…”
He gave a faint, humorless smile.
“…this wouldn’t have made the list.”
Neither woman smiled.
Ryan folded his hands on the desk.
“I’ve just spent the last hour learning that my relationship has involved two different people.”
His eyes moved to Samantha.
“I’d like to understand your part in it.”
Samantha met his gaze.
“I never intended for it to go this far.”
Emily looked down.
Ryan noticed.
“So both of you have used that sentence today.”
He looked back at Samantha.
“When Emily first asked you to help her…”
“She was terrified.”
“I know.”
“I felt sorry for her.”
Ryan remained silent.
“So I agreed to meet you once.”
“Just once.”
Ryan nodded slowly.
“The first dinner.”
“Yes.”
“What happened after that?”
Samantha hesitated.
For the first time in a long time…
She didn’t have a clever answer ready.
Ryan waited patiently.
Finally she spoke.
“You kept calling.”
“I know.”
“You kept asking to see me.”
“I know.”
“I thought…”
She stopped.
Ryan waited.
“I thought I could manage it.”
Emily looked at her.
“Manage what?”
Samantha finally turned toward Emily.
“The situation.”
Emily’s voice became quiet.
“You mean Ryan.”
Samantha closed her eyes briefly.
“I didn’t mean for it to become personal.”
Ryan asked softly,
“But it did.”
She looked at him.
“…Yes.”
Silence filled the office again.
Ryan leaned forward.
“So let me make sure I understand.”
He pointed gently toward Emily.
“She created the lie.”
Emily nodded.
“Yes.”
Then Ryan looked at Samantha.
“And you continued it.”
A long pause.
“…Yes.”
Ryan rubbed his temples.
Neither confession made him feel any better.
If anything…
It made everything more painful.
He looked at Samantha again.
“I have one question.”
She nodded.
“When did you stop pretending?”
The room became so quiet that the ticking clock on the wall suddenly sounded loud.
Samantha’s lips parted slightly.
She searched for an answer.
Then finally whispered,
“I don’t know.”
Ryan held her gaze.
“I think you do.”
A tear formed in Samantha’s eye before she could stop it.
“It wasn’t one moment.”
Her voice trembled.
“It happened slowly.”
She looked down at her hands.
“You’d ask about my day.”
“You remembered little things.”
“You listened.”
“No one had ever really listened.”
Ryan remained completely still.
“I kept telling myself…”
She laughed bitterly.
“…just one more conversation.”
“Just one more dinner.”
“Just one more call.”
She swallowed hard.
“And then one day…”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“I realized I wasn’t helping Emily anymore.”
“I was waiting to hear your voice.”
Emily shut her eyes.
The words hurt.
Even though she had already suspected them.
Ryan looked away toward the window.
Three lives.
One lie.
And now…
Three broken hearts sat inside the same room.
No one spoke for almost a full minute.
Finally Ryan stood.
He walked slowly toward the window overlooking the city.
His reflection stared back at him in the glass.
Without turning around, he spoke.
“I’ve spent my career making decisions using facts.”
He smiled sadly.
“But this…”
He shook his head.
“…this isn’t a business problem.”
He turned back to face them.
“This is three human beings who made terrible decisions for different reasons.”
His eyes settled on Emily.
“You lied because you believed you weren’t enough.”
Then he looked at Samantha.
“You lied because somewhere along the way…”
His voice softened.
“…you wanted what never belonged to you.”
Neither woman could argue.
Because both statements were painfully true.
Ryan sighed deeply.
“I can’t make any decisions today.”
He looked at both of them.
“I’m too close to this.”
He walked back to his desk.
“So here’s what is going to happen.”
Both women looked at him.
“You are both going home.”
“No more lies.”
“No more pretending.”
“No more meeting me.”
His voice remained calm but firm.
“I need time.”
Emily nodded first.
“I understand.”
Samantha nodded a few seconds later.
“So do I.”
Ryan walked to the office door and opened it himself.
Neither woman moved immediately.
For a brief moment, the three of them simply looked at one another.
It felt strangely like the end of something.
And perhaps…
The beginning of something else entirely.
Emily rose first.
Without saying another word, she walked out of the office.
Samantha remained seated for a few more seconds.
Then she stood.
As she reached the doorway, she paused.
“I really am sorry.”
Ryan didn’t answer immediately.
After a long silence, he simply said,
“I hope you are.”
Samantha lowered her head.
Then quietly walked away.
Ryan remained alone in his office.
For the first time in weeks, the room felt unbearably empty.
He looked at the chair where Emily had been sitting.
Then at the chair Samantha had just left.
Finally, he closed his eyes.
There had been two faces.
Two voices.
Two lies.
But somewhere inside all the deception…
There had also been something real.
He just didn’t know what to believe anymore.
