Emily’s heart pounded as Samantha finally answered the phone.
“Samantha…”
There was no response.
“Why exactly did you give Ryan your number?”
Then Samantha answered.
“I already told you.”
Emily closed her eyes.
She had hoped Ryan misunderstood.
She had hoped there was another explanation.
“There really was another phone,” she whispered to herself.
“What?”
Emily shook her head.
“Why would you do that?”
Samantha sounded almost amused.
For convenience.
Emily stood up from the edge of her bed and began pacing around the room.
“Samantha…”
Her voice was no longer angry.
It was frightened.
“That wasn’t part of the plan.”
Samantha remained silent.
The silence irritated Emily even more.
“We agreed you were only helping me through one meeting.”
“I know.”
“So why would you give him your number?”
“I didn’t think it mattered.”
“It matters.”
Emily stopped walking.
“It changes everything.”
Samantha sighed softly.
“Emily…”
“He already thinks something doesn’t add up.”
“So?”
“So every new lie makes things worse.”
Another pause.
Emily pressed one hand against her forehead.
“Listen carefully.”
“I’m listening.”
“He wants a video call.”
“I know.”
“You need to answer it.”
“No.”
Emily blinked.
“What?”
“I’m not doing a video call.”
“You have to.”
“I don’t.”
“Samantha…”
Emily’s voice became desperate.
“Please.”
“He already suspects something.”
“So let him.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
“I said let him.”
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
Samantha replied quietly.
“You don’t.”
Emily swallowed hard.
“If you don’t answer…”
She searched desperately for the right words.
“…everything falls apart.”
Silence.
Then Emily spoke more gently.
“Just pick up.”
Another pause.
“Tell him you’re exhausted.”
Nothing.
“Keep it short.”
Still nothing.
“If you have to…”
Emily forced a weak laugh.
“…pretend you’re falling asleep.”
Finally…
Samantha sighed.
“Fine.”
Emily released the breath she’d been holding.
“Thank you.”
But before Samantha ended the call…
Emily heard something.
Not reluctance.
Not annoyance.
Something else.
Curiosity.
A quiet curiosity that hadn’t been there before.
For some reason…
That frightened her more than if Samantha had simply refused.
The video call happened barely fifteen minutes later.
Emily couldn’t sit still.
She paced around her apartment.
Looked out the window.
Checked the clock.
Walked back.
Every passing minute stretched endlessly.
Her imagination tortured her.
Were they laughing?
Was Ryan asking questions?
Did Samantha remember everything Emily had told her?
Or…
Was she simply being herself?
Emily didn’t know which possibility terrified her more.
Finally…
Her phone vibrated.
Ryan.
Her fingers trembled as she opened the message.
RyanCarter88:
You look exhausted.
Emily immediately exhaled.
It worked.
At least…
It seemed to.
She replied carefully.
EmilyP:
I warned you.
A long week finally caught up with me.
Ryan answered almost instantly.
RyanCarter88:
Then stop apologizing.
Go get some sleep.
Emily smiled faintly.
EmilyP:
Yes, sir.
A laughing emoji appeared.
Then one final message.
RyanCarter88:
Goodnight, Emily.
Sweet dreams.
Emily placed the phone on the table.
Everything should have felt better.
Instead…
Something still felt wrong.
Ryan hadn’t questioned her.
He hadn’t argued.
He hadn’t challenged another excuse.
Yet somehow…
She couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t completely convinced.
Life settled into a strange routine over the next several days.
At least…
It appeared to.
Whenever Ryan called Samantha’s phone, Samantha would tell Emily afterward.
“He asked about work.”
“We talked about music.”
“He wanted to know my favorite vacation.”
Emily appreciated the updates.
They made her feel involved.
Almost…
As though she still had some control.
But little by little…
The updates became shorter.
“We talked.”
“He called.”
“It was fine.”
Nothing more.
One evening Emily finally asked,
“Did Ryan call today?”
Samantha looked up from the novel she was reading.
“Yeah.”
Emily waited.
Nothing else came.
“What did you two talk about?”
Samantha shrugged casually.
“Oh…”
She turned another page.
“Nothing important.”
Emily frowned.
Nothing important?
That wasn’t like Samantha.
She usually remembered every detail.
Every joke.
Every awkward moment.
Every compliment.
Now…
She seemed strangely uninterested in sharing.
Or perhaps…
Too interested in keeping it to herself.
Ryan changed too.
The conversations no longer flowed as naturally.
His replies became slower.
More thoughtful.
Sometimes he disappeared for hours before answering.
Then one evening…
A message appeared that made Emily’s stomach sink.
RyanCarter88:
Can I ask you something?
Emily immediately replied.
EmilyP:
Always.
Several seconds passed.
Then…
RyanCarter88:
Do you ever feel like people can change overnight?
Emily stared at the screen.
Her fingers hesitated.
EmilyP:
What do you mean?
Ryan replied almost immediately.
RyanCarter88:
I don’t know.
Lately…
You don’t always feel like the same person I’ve been talking to.
Emily’s heartbeat quickened.
She forced herself to stay calm.
EmilyP:
You’re imagining things.
Ryan’s typing bubble appeared.
Stopped.
Appeared again.
Finally…
RyanCarter88:
Am I?
That single question echoed inside Emily’s mind long after the conversation ended.
He knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Enough to start questioning.
Enough to start looking.
Over the next week…
Emily began noticing something she wished she hadn’t.
Whenever she called Samantha…
She took long before answering her phone.
Sometimes, she wouldn’t even answer at all.
Not every time.
Just enough.
At first Emily convinced herself she was imagining it.
Then she noticed Samantha laughing quietly when she mentioned Ryan during one of their calls.
A genuine laugh.
Not one she forced.
One that came naturally.
A particular evening, at the restaurant, Samantha ended a video call with Ryan and remained staring thoughtfully at the phone for several moments.
She didn’t realize Emily was watching.
When she finally looked up…
Their eyes met.
For just one second…
Both women understood something neither of them wanted to say aloud.
Emily’s stomach twisted.
Samantha wasn’t simply helping anymore.
She was becoming part of Ryan’s life.
Little by little.
Conversation by conversation.
Call by call.
And perhaps the most frightening part wasn’t Samantha.
It was Ryan.
He was beginning to recognize differences.
Different laughter.
Different pauses.
Different ways of speaking.
Different reactions.
He knew something wasn’t consistent.
But he didn’t know why.
He wasn’t comparing Samantha to Emily.
He was comparing today’s Emily…
…to yesterday’s Emily.
Trying desperately to understand which version was real.
The cruel truth was…
Neither one was.
One woman owned the face.
The other owned the words.
And somewhere between them…
The real Emily was slowly disappearing.
That night, Emily sat alone in her Brooklyn apartment.
Her phone rested in her hands.
Unopened.
Unanswered.
Outside, rain tapped softly against the window.
Inside…
Her thoughts were louder than the storm.
She looked at her own reflection in the dark glass.
For the first time in weeks…
She hardly recognized the woman staring back at her.
This wasn’t who she wanted to become.
She had lied because she wanted to be seen.
Now…
She was watching someone else slowly become the person Ryan knew.
She closed her eyes.
Enough.
No more excuses.
No more borrowed photographs.
No more pretending.
Tomorrow…
She would tell Ryan everything.
Every lie.
Every message.
Every terrible decision.
No matter how much it hurt.
Because somewhere along the way…
She had realized something.
Losing Ryan would break her heart.
But losing herself…
Would destroy what was left of it.
