Several weeks had passed since Emily walked out of Ryan Carter’s office.

Life had continued.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

Ryan had buried himself in work again.

The postponed meeting with one of the company’s biggest clients had been a huge success. The contract was signed. His executives celebrated. Marcus insisted on taking everyone out for dinner.

Ryan smiled.

He congratulated his team.

He even made a short speech.

But the moment he returned to his penthouse that evening…

The silence welcomed him again.

He loosened his tie, placed his phone on the kitchen counter and walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering New York skyline.

The city was alive.

His apartment wasn’t.

He poured himself a glass of water and stood there for several minutes.

Without realizing it…

His thoughts drifted back to her.

Emily.

He closed his eyes.

“Why?” he whispered to himself.

“I barely knew her…”

Yet somehow…

It felt like he had known her for years.

That realization frustrated him.

Ryan had never been a man who fell in love easily.

After Olivia’s betrayal years ago, he had built walls around his heart so high that nobody had ever managed to climb them.

Not colleagues.

Not business associates.

Not the women his friends constantly tried introducing him to.

Nobody.

Yet somehow…

A woman whose face he had never seen for weeks…

Had quietly found her way into his heart.

He laughed bitterly.

“This doesn’t even make sense.”

He walked into his study.

His laptop was still open from work.

Instead of opening financial reports…

His eyes wandered toward an old notebook lying on the shelf.

Inside it were random things he occasionally wrote whenever he needed to clear his mind.

He opened it.

Then paused.

Without thinking…

He wrote one sentence.

“I miss talking to her.”

Ryan stared at the words.

Slowly…

He added another.

“Not Samantha.”

He sighed.

“No…”

He crossed out Samantha’s name.

Then wrote another.

“Emily.”

He leaned back.

“What exactly is happening to me?”

For several minutes he simply stared at the page.

Then memories began replaying in his mind.

Emily laughing over one of his terrible jokes.

The long conversations they had late into the night.

How she always listened before speaking.

How she never tried to impress him.

How she remembered little details about him.

How she always encouraged him to rest whenever he worked too much.

He remembered how excited she became whenever they discussed books.

How she preferred meaningful conversations over gossip.

How she once told him…

“Money can make life comfortable, but kindness makes life worth living.”

At the time…

He hadn’t paid much attention to the sentence.

Now…

It echoed inside him.

Ryan slowly rubbed his face.

“The woman I fell for…”

“…was never the woman in the photographs.”

He stood abruptly.

Pacing across the room.

“No…”

“It was never Samantha.”

“It was Emily.”

The realization hit him harder than he expected.

He stopped walking.

His heartbeat quickened.

He remembered sitting across from Emily in his office.

She had looked nothing like the woman in the photographs.

Yet…

He had struggled to stop looking at her.

Not because of beauty.

But because of something else.

Something impossible to explain.

Her honesty.

Her vulnerability.

Her courage.

She had every opportunity to continue lying.

Instead…

She walked into his office and destroyed the only chance she believed she had with him.

Who does that?

Someone seeking money wouldn’t.

Someone chasing status definitely wouldn’t.

Someone manipulating him certainly wouldn’t.

Only someone who genuinely regretted hurting another person…

Would.

Ryan slowly smiled.

“A liar doesn’t usually walk into the truth willingly.”

The sentence lingered in his mind.

Then another thought surfaced.

If Emily had wanted his money…

Why confess?

Why not simply disappear?

Why cry the way she did?

Why accept losing him instead of fighting to keep the lie alive?

None of it added up.

Meanwhile…

Everything about Samantha now raised questions.

He remembered every video call.

Every awkward silence.

Every contradiction.

Sometimes she sounded nothing like the woman he had been speaking to online.

Other times…

She couldn’t remember conversations they had supposedly shared.

He remembered asking simple questions.

Questions only Emily could answer naturally.

Samantha always hesitated.

Changed the subject.

Or laughed it off.

At the time…

He assumed she was nervous.

Now…

Everything suddenly made sense.

Ryan rested both hands on his desk.

“I wasn’t falling in love with Samantha.”

“I was falling in love with Emily.”

The truth settled quietly inside him.

It didn’t erase the pain.

It didn’t erase the deception.

But it explained everything.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

The following morning…

Marcus stepped into Ryan’s office carrying two cups of coffee.

“I figured you skipped breakfast again.”

Ryan smiled faintly.

“I did.”

Marcus handed him one cup.

“I knew it.”

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Marcus had learned that Ryan always spoke first whenever something weighed heavily on his mind.

Today was no different.

Ryan stared into the coffee.

Then quietly said,

“I think I know why I couldn’t move on.”

Marcus looked up.

Ryan continued.

“I kept telling myself I was trying to forget the lie.”

He smiled sadly.

“But I wasn’t.”

Marcus remained silent.

“I was trying to forget Emily.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“And?”

Ryan looked out through the glass wall overlooking the city.

“I couldn’t.”

Another silence.

Finally Marcus asked,

“What changed?”

Ryan gave a tired laugh.

“I finally stopped thinking about the photographs.”

Marcus smiled.

“And started thinking about the person?”

Ryan nodded.

“I wasn’t in love with a face.”

“I was in love with the woman behind the conversations.”

“The woman who challenged my ideas.”

“The woman who made me laugh.”

“The woman who listened.”

“The woman who apologized even when she knew it would cost her everything.”

Marcus leaned back in his chair.

“I’ve been waiting for you to say that.”

Ryan looked at him.

“You knew?”

Marcus chuckled.

“I suspected.”

Ryan raised an eyebrow.

Marcus smiled.

“Every time you spoke about Samantha, you described a face.”

“But every time you spoke about Emily…”

“…you described a soul.”

Ryan looked away.

Marcus continued gently.

“You’ve spent weeks trying to convince yourself that you could forget her.”

Ryan nodded.

“I know.”

Marcus folded his hands.

“So let me ask you something.”

Ryan looked at him.

“When you imagine your future…”

“…whose voice do you hear?”

Ryan didn’t answer immediately.

He didn’t have to.

He at first appeared to be lost in thought, and then almost subconsciously, he said.

“Emily.”

Marcus smiled.

“I thought so.”

Ryan sighed.

“I still don’t know what to do.”

Marcus stood.

“You don’t have to know everything today.”

He placed a reassuring hand on Ryan’s shoulder.

“But one thing is certain.”

Ryan looked up.

Marcus smiled warmly.

“Your heart already made its decision.”

Ryan stood quietly for several seconds.

Then he looked toward the city skyline.

For the first time in weeks…

He stopped fighting the truth.

He loved Emily Parker.

Not the borrowed face.

Not the beautiful photographs.

Not the fantasy.

The real Emily.

And somewhere deep inside him…

He knew that this story between them…

Was far from over.
