Saturday arrived quietly.

Emily spent most of the morning cleaning her apartment, mostly to keep herself distracted.

At exactly one o’clock…

The doorbell rang.

When she opened the door…

Mia stood there balancing two shopping bags.

“I come bearing peace offerings.”

Emily couldn’t help smiling.

“I thought you said lunch.”

“I lied.”

Mia held up another bag.

“I also brought ice cream.”

Emily stepped aside.

“Come in.”

As Mia entered, she looked around the modest apartment.

“It feels…”

She searched for the right word.

“Comfortable.”

Emily shrugged.

“It’s home.”

“It suits you.”

After lunch…

They settled on the couch with mugs of coffee.

For a while…

Neither of them spoke.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

It was peaceful.

Finally, Mia looked at Emily.

“You know…”

“You don’t have to carry everything alone.”

Emily stared into her mug.

“I’ve been doing it for years.”

“I know.”

“And maybe that’s the problem.”

Emily looked up.

Something about Mia’s calm voice made the walls she’d built around herself begin to crumble.

Before she realized it…

She was talking.

Everything came pouring out.

Ryan.

The dating app.

Using Samantha’s photograph.

The lies.

The first meeting.

The video calls.

The confrontation.

Ryan’s disappointment.

Samantha’s betrayal.

The tears she had hidden from everyone else.

For nearly two hours…

Mia didn’t interrupt.

She simply listened.

When Emily finally finished speaking, she looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“I didn’t mean to dump all of that on you.”

Mia shook her head gently.

“You didn’t dump anything on me.”

“You trusted me.”

There was a brief silence.

Then Mia asked softly,

“Emily…”

“Can you search your heart honestly and tell me exactly what you feel for Ryan?”

Emily looked surprised.

“I mean really search your heart,” Mia continued.

“There are many emotions people mistake for love.”

She counted them on her fingers.

“Loneliness.”

“Infatuation.”

“Obsession.”

“Admiration.”

“Convenience.”

“Even the desire for someone’s lifestyle.”

She looked directly into Emily’s eyes.

“None of those are the same as genuine love.”

Emily thought quietly before answering.

“When I first signed up for that app…”

“I was lonely.”

“I won’t deny that.”

She smiled sadly.

“I thought I simply wanted someone to talk to.”

“But after getting to know Ryan…”

Her voice softened.

“Something changed.”

“I didn’t even know who he really was.”

“I honestly had no idea how wealthy or successful he was until Samantha told me.”

She looked down at her hands.

“I fell in love with the person.”

“The way he listened.”

“The way he remembered little things.”

“The way he made me feel seen.”

“If I had known from the beginning that someone like Ryan could actually care about someone like me…”

She smiled through tears.

“I would never have used Samantha’s picture.”

“I regret that decision every single day.”

Mia believed every word.

“I know,” she said quietly.

Then she leaned back thoughtfully.

“Do you know what I think?”

Emily shook her head.

“I think men like Ryan have a different problem.”

Emily frowned slightly.

“They spend their lives wondering whether people love them…”

“…or simply love what they have.”

She continued,

“After everything that’s happened…”

“He may believe both you and Samantha were chasing his status.”

“Not his heart.”

Emily lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“So don’t spend your life trying to prove something you can’t force.”

Mia smiled gently.

“If something is truly meant for you…”

“It has a way of finding its way back.”

Emily listened carefully.

“But until then…”

“You owe yourself something.”

Emily looked up.

“What?”

“Grace.”

“Forgive yourself.”

“Learn from your mistakes.”

“Build your confidence.”

“Stop living beneath someone else’s shadow.”

Mia reached across the table and gently squeezed Emily’s hand.

“Emily…”

“You are a beautiful woman.”

“You have a sincere heart.”

“And I honestly believe your future is brighter than you can see right now.”

“The only thing standing between you and that future…”

“…is the way you see yourself.”

Emily felt tears gathering again.

Not from sadness.

From relief.

No one had spoken to her like this in years.

After a moment, Mia asked softly,

“What about your family?”

Emily’s expression changed immediately.

“My mother died years ago.”

Mia’s smile faded.

“I’m so sorry.”

Emily nodded.

“My father and I haven’t spoken in years.”

“I don’t even know if he’s still alive.”

“I’m an only child.”

“And honestly…”

“I don’t even know if he remarried after my mother’s death.”

She sighed heavily.

“We were never close.”

“I blamed him for what happened to my mum.”

“So I walked away.”

Mia listened quietly before sharing a little of her own story.

They spoke for hours.

Not as coworkers.

But as two women who had survived different kinds of pain.

When Mia finally stood to leave that evening, Emily walked her to the door.

“Thank you,” Emily said sincerely.

“I didn’t realize how much I needed today.”

Mia smiled warmly.

“That’s what friends are for.”

Emily watched her leave.

Then closed the door gently behind her.

For the first time in what felt like forever…

The apartment didn’t feel quite so empty.

And without realizing it…

A new friendship had quietly begun.
